When personal property is handed down and preserved by the descendants, it is a special accomplishment. John Brooks Sr. brought his family from England, first to the James River in Virginia, then to North Carolina in Cumberland County where he served as a vestryman in 1754. A sea chest was brought from England by his wife, Susan, and handed down through the generations. On the side of the chest is "S. B. - Susan" Brooks patented some land in 1735 which was located about ten miles from Rock Fish Creek.
