Asheville was made famous when George Washington Vanderbilt II build the largest privately owned home in North America between 1889 and 1895. The Chateauesque-styled mansion is situated on 8,000 acres and a major tourist attraction in the area. The Biltmore House is the largest private residence in the United States. The main entrance leads into a hall with a Guastavino tile ceiling 75 feet high, and to the right of the hall is an indoor winter garden.
