After structures were burned down by escaping prisoners, the 1838 jail house as well as the 1833 office of the clerk in Halifax were built to be fire-proof. The town of Halifax was founded in 1760 and entertained the Fourth Provincial Congress on April 12, 1776, wherein it adopted the "Halifax Resolves" calling for independence from England. Then, when the Fifth Provincial Congress met during the fall of 1776 and the first constitution for North Carolina was drafted and approved, Richard Caswell was appointed the first governor. Thus, during the Revolutionary War Halifax served as a recruitment center, military depot and public weapons factory. And one more noteworthy instance: During May of 1781 before marching into Virginia, General Cornwallis occupied a house nearby called "The Grove", but only a large brick chimney remains today.Find more about your ancestors on North Carolina Pioneers
