(Profile)Currituck was named for an Algonquin Indian term meaning "The Land of the Wild Goose," because the Outer Banks are so abundant with geese, waters, marshes, and woods. Settlers to this area came from the New England colonies, particularly mariners beginning about 1668. Actually, this port was one of the five original ports in America. The outer banks was uncharted territory, yet some religious groups trickled down from Virginia into the region. The first court house was not constructed until after 1700 and a jail was built there in 1776 by the Colonial Legislature. Genealogical researchers should examine the records encompassing the James River in Virginia as well as Boston, Connecticut and New York.
