The function of the Saving Station was to rescue ships in distress and they did this by rowing out into the sea in surf boats. Also, at nightime they patrolled the beaches on foot between stations. The Saving Station was established during the 1870s and lasted until 1915, ultimately become part of the U. S. Coast Guard.
